Are you smarter than the principal?
November 7th at Lake Elmo Library

At 4:30 pm on Thursday, November 7, Lake Elmo Elementary students and others will get the chance to answer the question, “Are you smarter than the Principal?”. PowerUp is teaming with the library to find out if the students or Principal Gorde know more about eating better, thinking smarter, moving more, and growing up strong and healthy. The students will get the chance to challenge the principal on questions about how to PowerUp with fruits and veggies, colorful foods, meals and snacks, less screen time, being active and playing and skipping the sugary drinks. All participants will Other activities include an Apple taste test and "name that fruit". Also, students will get a chance to feed the bookworms that are composting indoors at Wormy Acres in the library. Registration is not necessary and the event is free.
New Century Artists Present Art Cornucopia on Nov. 15 at Lake Elmo Library

The New Century Artists will present a Pre-Holiday Art Cornucopia with an opening reception on Friday, November 15 from 6 to 8 pm at the library. The eleven artists have been working together for over 15 years and use acrylic, oil, pastel and watercolor in their art. The group includes Dagny Bilkadi, Lou Cunico, Laurel Gregorian, Mike Kramer, Bor-Jiin Mao, Jill Marudas, Bev Marx, Dave Prochniak, David Swanson, Mark Weersma and Al Weber. They currently meet at the Lake Elmo regional Art Center on a regular basis to learn, discuss, and create their various pieces. They http// at the Lake Elmo Library along with shows at ArtReach St. Croix and various local coffee shops, restaurant and other venues. Light appetizers and beverages will be served. The public is invited to stop in, check out the exciting new art, and discuss the pictures with the artist.

Café Philo Meets on Wednesdays at Lake Elmo Public Library

Café Philo meets every Wednesday from 10:15 to 11:45 am. The Café does not serve dessert, but rather will meet weekly to talk about world, national, and local issues. The participants will learn from each other by sharing information and insightful discussion. The group decides the topic to be discussed each week.

Topics for the next meetings:

Wednesday, November 13: Limits to growth -- local, national, international
Wednesday, November 20: Is nationalism necessary in a globalized world?
Wednesday, November 27: Technological progress is founded on an educated population that has some idea of the value of scientific thinking. Our population does not understand scientific thinking. What options do we have?

Topics which may be discussed in the future include:

Who writes history and who revises/spins it?
Do truth and sanity always prevail, even when many media channels are overtly biased?
Does history repeat? What patterns have you seen repeated in your lifetime, and how does this affect your outlook or decision making?
How has literacy changed in the digital age? Do you write letters or are you texting? How are members of the next generation documenting their lives (or not)?
What is the role of belief in society?
Cash and credit are inconvenient. What is a better way of transmitting value?

Poetry Group Meets at Library

Have you dreamed of sharing your poems with other writers?

Lake Elmo Library hosts informal readings by local writers once a month. We gather to share our poems and support local poets.

Open to all!

The Poetry group meets on the second Tuesday of the month from 6 to 8 pm.
East Metro Writing Room Meets on Mondays
Writers looking for a quiet space, free coffee, craft conversation, and inspiration are invited to Lake Elmo Public Library on Monday mornings from 8:30 to noon.

Membership is free and open to any writer seeking motivation and heads-down drafting time. In addition to the quiet room, the “procrastination station” will be open for coffee breaks and lively chat with other authors. A smaller breakout room is available for discussion on topics ranging from passive voice to marketing kindle books.
